I don't know the Rules of Blogging (and when I learn them I may Disregard them); I don't know HTML, not even a little bit; all I know is that as I scrubbed the sinks white again this evening I was writing in my head, something I haven't dared to do since high school, really (see above re: self-critic). I thought, "What the hell? No one will read it anyway but people who love me - and they've got a granddaughter/niece to catch up on, so I've got a guaranteed and kind audience." And, "This is why there are so many mama blogs out there - we've got to find ourselves somehow, some way, in the uncentered shuffle of everyday tending; to remember that we have a center, are working the most worthwhile earthly work, are worthy of reflection."
I dunno. I'm also just excited about sharing recipes.
(And here we come to the first Rule I don't know the answer to. I don't even have my own recipe to post. I tried someone's else's online recipe today (and it was fabulous): Paleo-Style Duck Pad Thai. I don't know if I get to just post the link to it, or if I need to get permission first (why would I? I found it on Google just like you could!); what's more, I don't know how to code it so you click on Paleo-Style Duck Pad Thai and it takes you right there. Excuse me while I go find out (research break!). Paleo-Style Duck Pad Thai Whoa! There, I did it! My first jottings ever in HTML! And now I know what a hyperlink is!)
I want to brag. This morning I had one thawed duck.
This evening I have: Duck Pad Thai for three people (two large and one small), check. One fed and happy family, check. One small jar rendered duck fat, check. One half cup cracklings (now all inside me, and I deeply lamented coming to the end of them), check. One carcass simmering away overnight for stock, check. Two duck legs to be braised with onions tomorrow for lunch, check.
Merit badge: Duck Preparation Techniques, check!
Which brings me to the title of my blog, "The Pemmican Papers." The "Papers" part is just for fun ('cause it's a screen, obviously). The "Pemmican" is representative of my passion for most things paleolithic, tribal, primal, instinctive, what have you. In my life this looks like practicing Elimination Communication (look! another hyperlink!) with our baby, eating Paleo (it's cooler if I don't keep pointing it out, isn't it?), unschooling, bedsharing, babywearing, extended nursing, dabbling in wild plant foraging and herbalism, living in community, conscious non-monogamy, and other practices that make me feel cave-woman-y, interdependent, earth-connected, and in tune with millenia of human evolution and with my own heart. (Besides being about my venture into the blogosphere, the title of this entry indicates that I'm one step closer to knowing what I'm doing in the realms of food and self-sufficiency and real bodily nourishment. Thank you, duck.)
And someday I am going to actually make pemmican...
